Why I Love This Simple Hand Soap Recipe
This soap recipe is cheap, simple and healthy. Healthy is a weird way to describe soap, but it is an important thing to consider! Our skin is our largest organ. What we put on it absorbs into our body and can effect us negatively. Just like we want to breathe clean, quality air, we want to absorb clean, quality ingredients.
Many store bought soaps contain synthetic (lab-made) fragrances, dyes, preservatives and antibacterial additives that can strip skin of its natural oils. This can lead to dryness or irritation for many skin types. Authentic Castile soaps are primarily made from vegetable oils (olive, coconut, hemp or jojoba) and are less likely to disrupt the skin barrier. Unscented liquid Castile soaps generally contain very few ingredients, keeping to a simple profile.
While any brand of Castile soap can be used in this hand soap recipe, my favorite is Dr. Bronner’s. It is non-toxic, and while I generally reach for the unscented bottle so I can add my own essential oils, this company does have a wide variety of scents to choose from that are just as great!
