Our kids work really hard to create beautiful artwork that we can “Ooh and ahh” over. As parents, we’re so proud of them and we want them to be proud of their hard work too. But when artwork begins to take over the refrigerator, the counters, the dressers, the junk drawer… what the heck are we supposed to do with all of it? Don’t worry! I have some simple solutions that have worked very well for our young family.
First, Talk to Your Kids
In the beginning of my parenting journey I was always surprised at how understanding my toddlers could be when I simply took the time to get down on their level and explain why we were doing something a certain way. At those ages, it sometimes took a few reminders to make something stick but practice and patience typically yielded a favorable result. This was even true when it came to my dilemma of overwhelming amounts of artwork scattered around the house. It was too much and I hated to throw away things my kids were so proud to make. I don’t mind an untidy home but when clutter lingers for too long we all begin to feel chaos instead of peace.
I decided to have a conversation with my kids about how we were going to save those beautiful, colorful art pieces around our home and guess what? They loved it! Here was my solution: we would have dedicated frames displayed around the house for artwork and the fridge could still be used BUT- pieces were to be replaced, not added to. Yes, this means some will end up in the recycling/trash. The kids decide which ones stay and which ones go and I give them the gentle reminder that even though I love all of their projects, it’s just not possible to keep them all at the same time.
Where to Display Kids Artwork
Kids are a very large part of what makes a house a home, so it makes sense to let them be a part of decorating it too! Frames can be put in any room to display kids artwork. The gathering room, dining room, playroom, bedrooms and even a bathroom are great options. Artwork frames can obviously be hung on walls or simply placed on a media center, sofa table, dresser or shelf.
Display Kids Artwork on a Shelf or Wall Ledge
Below is an example using shelves and a wall ledge in the dining room. I chose to decorate one shelf with an artificial plant, frame for artwork, our chat books and two glass timers that were used for various activities throughout the day. The coordinating shelf on the other side of the window was a display of adult beverages and drink ware.
Our board and batten wall had a small one inch ledge that I chose to display several types of artwork on. Each piece represented a special moment of our lives. In the mix of these pieces, I added simple frames for my kid’s artwork. We also displayed clay figures our nephew made for us here! Museum putty kept these all in place so they didn’t topple over when someone walked by them. Adding the kids artwork pulled them into the decor without overpowering the room with just one theme. The room didn’t look childish. Instead it was a sentimental display that made eating meals together in this room feel oh so cozy.

Display Kids Artwork in a Wall Collage
Another easy, clutter free way to display kids artwork is in the playroom! Below is an example using wooden Ikea frames on a wall. These frames were plastic so I didn’t have to worry about glass shattering if a ball accidentally got tossed into them. This collage wall didn’t require any measuring! I started by hammering a nail into the wall for the largest frame. I hung the large frame then held up another and put roughly 1″ spacing around each frame. So simple! The random orientation and brightly painted pictures fit perfectly in this playroom.

Display Kids Artwork in Their Bedroom
Another favorite place I’ve displayed our kid’s artwork is in their bedroom! They happened to have a large, blank wall above a dresser. I happened to have 12 sophisticated square white frames from a previous home project. It just made sense to add a picture gallery wall to their bedroom! By using 12 frames they each had a choice of 6 pictures to display. When they have a new favorite they are able to swap one out. This made them so excited!

Decorating a home takes time and careful consideration. I personally prefer our decor to have sentimental value. A random picture of an ocean view doesn’t make me smile unless my family has fond memories at that specific location. When I’m in a room I want to feel the love and memories from the things I’m looking at. Adding kids artwork is a simple way to do that! I hope these 3 clutter free ways to display kids artwork inspire you to create a cheerful family vibe in your own home!
