I have a video of my 3 year-old saying names of dinosaurs flash-card-style from a deck found in the Target Dollar Aisle. That’s when I knew this topic was something special. Dinosaurs completely captivated my son for years and my husband and I had so much fun learning beside him and sharing this interest with our other children!
I am now on my 3rd dinosaur loving child and believe me when I say we’ve gone through a lot of books. Reading is one of our family’s favorite things to do together! Below I’ve listed our favorite dinosaur books by age, keeping in mind these books will grow with the child. Starting at a young age to introduce the names of dinosaurs to your child (and let’s be honest, us parents too!), transitioning to silly picture books and eventually getting into detailed facts will fascinate curious children. Before my kids could read, they were reciting the pages from memory. I’m always amazed at how much information their brains can hold!
Please note that while libraries are great (we go every week!), it’s also important for kids to own a collection of their own books. This promotes a sense of ownership, responsibility and pride as they continue to pick up their favorite books again and again. So, in no particular order, here’s an amazing list of dinosaur books to own:
0-2 Years
- T.Rex Finger Puppet Board Book by Jaye Garnett Little hands love running from the velvet finger puppet.
- Never Touch The Dinosaurs by Rosie Greening A cute rhyming book with fun sensory touching!
- Dinosaur Dance! by Sandra Boynton A short book that gets you wiggling and giggling with your toddler. My 2 year old currently “reads” this proudly by memory!
- My Big Dinosaur Book by Roger Priddy A perfect introduction to dinosaurs, as the big squares behind the images help little ones differentiate between them easily. Also THE BEST book to help parents learn the names of dinosaurs right alongside their children.
3-5 Years
- I’m A Dirty Dinosaur by Janeen Brian
- Night Night, Dino-Snores by Nicola Edwards
- Dinosaurs 123: Scholastic Early Learners by Scholastic This will give young readers confidence as they touch and count with interactive pages and recognize common dinosaurs.
- How Do Dinosaurs Play with Their Friends? by Jane Yolen This entire series is adorable and well loved!
- What The Dinosaurs Did Last Night: A Very Messy Adventure by Refe and Susan Tuma This may be my personal favorite. Kids will laugh all the way through this book as they imagine toy dinos doing ornery things in their home!
- Tyrannosaurus Wrecks! by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen A great lesson for kids this age as they learn empathy and how to cooperate with peers.
- Tea Rex by Molly Idle A must have for the little ladies. Brothers will love it too!
- We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T Higgins
- Dinosaur A-Z: for kids who really love dinosaurs! by Roger Priddy A step up from My Big Dinosaur Book, this includes new dinosaurs and simple facts for eager learners.
- Diggersaurs Explore by Michael Whaite Combining a love of dinosaurs and construction trucks, kids will love the rhymes and point out the silly human workers on each page!
- How To Catch A Dinosaur by Adam Wallace
6+ Years
- Lifesize Dinosaurs by Sophy Henn So much fun for kids to compare dinosaur parts to their own bodies.
- Dinosaurs (Shine-A-Light) by Sara Hurst Add a small flashlight to make a cute gift!
- My Book of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Life: Animals and plants to amaze, surprise, and astonish! by DK and Dean R. Lomax Adds in prehistoric animals + more detailed facts to expand your child’s knowledge of dinosaurs and prehistoric life!
- Knowledge Encyclopedia Dinosaur!: Over 60 Prehistoric Creatures as You’ve Never Seen Them Before by DK and John Woodward Beautiful detailed pictures and facts.
- Prehistoric Predators: The Biggest Carnivores of the Prehistoric World by Brian Switek
Reading is one of the most important things we can do with our children. Once we find a subject they love, we should lean into it! By making reading a fun, memorable experience kids will continue their love of learning throughout their lives.
