Beef brisket can be an intimidating cut of meat but once you find a cooking method that works you will keep coming back for more! Although smokers are great, they’re not necessary to get a tasty meal. Pull out the slow cooker and let’s make a flavorful beef brisket!

Brisket is typically a main dish I like to save for a winter holiday but after trying it in the slow cooker I made a spot for it in my monthly meal rotation. It’s low maintenance and the flavor is so good!

I personally don’t like to over season meats. Brisket will get most of its flavor from the fat marbled throughout the cut so it especially doesn’t need much. I do however want a hint of something special and the recipe below nails it!

What’s In This Simple, Flavorful Brisket?

A small amount of dijon mustard with a hint of liquid smoke are the main constituents here. Salt, pepper, onions and minced garlic top it off to create a well balanced flavor.

Pour a small amount of water into slow cooker. In a bowl combine dijon mustard, liquid smoke, minced garlic, salt and pepper. Rub mixture over exposed meat of brisket (it’s not necessary to flavor the fat). Place fat side down in the slow cooker.

Slice two yellow onions and place on top of beef brisket. Cover slow cooker with lid. Cook on LOW 8-9 hours.

Pull beef out of slow cooker to slice or shred it. Do not put the meat back into the slow cooker to absorb the juices but rather spoon the juices over the plated meat. Placing it into the slow cooker may over season it!

What To Serve With Beef Brisket

Baked sweet potatoes and steamed broccoli are my personal favorite side dishes to beef brisket. Sometimes I will put the brisket on top of a baked sweet potato and top with sliced avocado and tomatoes. Another great option is a hearty side salad with fresh bread or rolls.

FAQ

How long will beef brisket keep? Stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, beef brisket will keep for 4 days.

Can cooked brisket be frozen? Yes. Place in a freezer bag, squeeze out as much air as possible and lay flat in the freezer. Unthaw on a plate in the fridge.

Can this be used as a meal prep? Slow cookers are great for a meal prep! Separate brisket into containers with some steamed veggies for a nutrient dense lunch.

Should I trim the fat? I leave all the fat for cooking, as it adds flavor. If the fat needs trimmed I will do so after cooking.

Where do I buy beef brisket? Local butchers or cow shares are a great option.
