Sometimes siblings sharing a bedroom is a necessity and sometimes it’s for fun! Either way, when creating a shared bedroom for a brother and sister you may wonder how to incorporate a theme that pleases both genders while complimenting the bedroom as a whole. If your kids love dinosaurs, this post is for you!

The Benefit of Sharing a Bedroom
Some parents may feel guilty having their children share a room if their home doesn’t allow for each child to have their own space. I have a completely different perspective than this! I’ve witnessed the blessing that has come from my son and daughter sharing a bedroom. I wholeheartedly believe it’s one of the things that has kept their relationship strong. Here’s how:
Sharing a room teaches empathy. When someone is scared or upset, overhearing the kids comfort each other and build each other up is incredibly sweet.
It promotes a stronger bond. I’ve listened to them giggle with anticipation the night before a big event, quieting each other down as they try to contain their excitement. As they’ve grown I’ve watched their late night tent-plotting plans come to life and witnessed many bedtime reading snuggles. The kids also love playing games or trading cards together, all done in the comfort of their shared bedroom.
It provides a sense of security. It’s not often that sharing a bedroom keeps my kids up late into the night. On the contrary, they fall asleep faster with the comfort of a nearby sibling. The stories they share minutes before sleep settles in typically result in proud, encouraged siblings enjoying childhood together.
What Age is Good For a Shared Bedroom?
When they’re ready! Our kids were 5 and 3 years old when they started sharing a bedroom. This was upon their request when we moved into our new home. Both kids were feeling scared thinking of sleeping in a new space, which I totally get! For the most part it has been a very positive experience. We will continue to have them share a bedroom until they’re ready to have their own space.
The Dino Theme
Lucky for us, our son and daughter who chose to share a bedroom both love dinosaurs! Our bedroom theme was clearly picked quickly but I wanted my daughter to have a touch of girly in her bedroom decor, as dinosaurs typically aren’t.. well, girly. I was thrilled when I found a bedding set of adorable dinosaurs, splashed with beautiful watercolored flowers. I quickly coordinated her bedding with a more boyish dinosaur pattern for my son and found a neutral blackout curtain pattern that complimented both sets! All of these have held up great the last three years.

Keeping things simple is important to me. I didn’t want to overload their walls with decals or colors that may need changed out in a few years. For the first two years their main decor was their bedding, stuffed animals and one wall of artwork. It wasn’t until the kids needed a sturdy space for lego creations and crafts that we added the floating shelves above the beds. The shelves alone really finished off the space!

Sharing a bedroom has bonded our young children in many ways and I’m really glad we gave it a try. I hope this simple bedroom for brother and sister theme has inspired you today! We do not have to build a jungle gym in our kids’ rooms for them to love their space. In my experience, simplicity creates calm for everyone.
